COSMETIC NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Microdemabrasion
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion has been referred to as the 'lunchtime peel," "power peel," "derma peel," or "Parisian peel." Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive skin resurfacing procedure which employs an abrasive substance, usually aluminum oxide, to gently exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin epidermis.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Benefits for microdermabrasion treatment include softening fine lines and wrinkles, relieving clogged pores, improving dull or thickened skin texture, and smoothing and blending pigment changes.
Is microdermabrasion permanent?
Microdermabrasion is not permanent. After the initial series, periodic treatments every three to four weeks are recommended to maintain the results.
What are the indications for Microdermabrasion?
General dermatological applications include the following:
- micro-peeling exfoliation
- hyperkeratosis (excessive thickening)
- skin aging, atrophic skin
- skin damaged by the sun
- small wrinkles, fine lines
- acne
- enlarged pores
- rough uneven textured skin
- hyperpigmentation
- stretch marks, straie.
Other indications include post-acne and hypertrophic scar removal and superficial tattoo removal.
How does microdermabrasion compare to other skin resurfacing treatments?
Microdermabrasion is used for superficial skin irregularities. It can be performed in an office without any anesthesia. It is slightly more aggressive than a light chemical peel. Dermabrasion uses a high-speed sanding wheel to skim away layers of skin to the dermis. Dermabrasion and laser resurfacing are both used for more significant skin problems, such as deeper wrinkles and scars, requiring topical anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. Microdermabrasion produces minimal redness and swelling lasting a few hours to a few days. Dermabrasion and laser resurfacing produce redness and swelling for a few weeks to a few months. Risks of scarring, infection, and changes in pigmentation will also be higher for these more invasive procedures.
Who is a candidate for microdermabrasion?
People who want a noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatment and have superficial skin irregularities, such as fine lines, small scars, or hyperpigmentation are ideal microdermabrasion candidates.
People who have skin sensitive to chemicals.
People who cannot afford the time, cost, recovery time, and possible side-effects of more invasive skin resurfacing techniques, such as deep chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser resurfacing.
People who do not wish to undergo general anesthesia or sedation.
How long does a treatment take?
A full-face treatment requires approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Rejuvenation of normal skin usually takes 6 to 8 sessions. Treatment sessions are usually done weekly or twice monthly.
